Defending IPL champions Chennai Super Kings have been handed a blow ahead of the 2019 season following an injury to Lungi Ngidi that has ruled him out of the tournament.
The South African pacer, who was expected to be a key member in the Super Kings pace attack, suffered a side strain during the fifth One-Day International against Sri Lanka at home recently.
Ngidi will now need four weeks of rest which will be followed by a rehab programme to make sure he is fully fit for the World Cup in England.
“Lungi felt discomfort while bowling during the last ODI against Sri Lanka at Newlands and immediately stopped bowling,” South Africa team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee said.
“Further scans revealed a Grade II muscle strain which will need up to four weeks of rest followed by a rehab programme leading up to the World Cup.”
Ngidi was initially picked up by Super Kings in the auction ahead of last season. He was instrumental in their title win playing seven games in which he picked up 11 wickets. The 22-year-old was expected to be their first-choice overseas seamer this season after he successfully recovered from a long injury layoff to return to the national team.
English bowling allrounder David Willey is the overseas backup seamer Super Kings have at the moment. The Indian contingent includes Shardul Thakur, Mohit Sharma, Deepak Chahar and KM Asif.
